[Activity Report] Visit to University of Tsukuba x National Taiwan University Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Research Center
Visit to University of Tsukuba x National Taiwan University Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Research Center

Led by Professor Fu Li-Chen, the director of the National Taiwan University Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Research Center (AIROBO), and Professor Tetsuya Sakurai, the director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (C-AIR) at the University of Tsukuba, a team from both institutions has been engaging in multiple exchanges since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in August 2022. These exchanges include the joint organization of an online workshop in October 2022, titled "NTU-Tsukuba-ITRI Workshop on AI x Medical and Healthcare," involving the University of Tsukuba and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Biomedical Technology Center. Additionally, in February 2023, a delegation led by President Kyoosuke Nagata from the University of Tsukuba visited Taiwan. During their visit, they engaged in discussions and exchanges with representatives from the University of Tsukuba's C-AIR, led by Professor Tetsuya Sakurai, and other Tsukuba representatives, including Vice President Hiroyuki Nishiyama of Tsukuba University Hospital.

For this visit, Professor Fu Li-Chen led a delegation comprising members from National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University Hospital, including Professor Wang Wei-Chung from the Institute of Applied Mathematical Sciences, Professor Zhang Yu-Ling from the Department of Psychology, Dr. Chiu Han-Mo, Director of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Health Management Center at National Taiwan University Hospital, Vice Director Lee Wen-Cheng from the Department of Radiology at National Taiwan University Hospital, Dr. Lin Hung-Ju from the Department of Internal Medicine, and Dr. Hsu Che-Yu from the Department of Oncology, among others. The visit took place from August 22nd to 23rd, lasting for two days, during which the delegation conducted on-site visits to the University of Tsukuba in Japan. The primary focus of the visit was to engage in discussions with Professor Sakurai's C-AIR team and approximately 20 researchers, including Vice President Nishiyama and researchers from various departments at the University of Tsukuba. The discussions centered around collaborative models and focused topics related to AI applications in healthcare, such as cognitive intervention and elderly care, cardiovascular and cancer-related disease analysis, and health risk assessment. The delegation aimed to gain insights into the trends and advancements in the field of healthcare at the University of Tsukuba and to explore opportunities for further collaboration. With the recommendation of Vice President Nishiyama, the delegation held discussions with nearly 20 researchers and physicians from over 10 departments at the university or hospital, identifying topics of mutual interest for future in-depth discussions and collaboration.

The arrangements for this visit will continue to maintain contact with the counterparts, and discussions regarding further collaboration on the discussed research topics will be pursued. Additionally, plans have already begun for the next in-person exchange between the two parties. This includes the UT-NTU Joint Symposium on Digital Health and Medicine 2023, scheduled for September 29th, where both the University of Tsukuba and National Taiwan University will collaborate further to expand the scope of research cooperation in digital healthcare
