Dr. Chen's research interests focus on applying data science methods to image processing and spectral analysis. Specific research topics include: (1) Development of on-field image recognition tools for crop/fruit growth monitoring and harvesting, pest/disease identification, and navigation aid systems. (2) Development of qualitative and quantitative models for quality and safety determination of agricultural products. Vibrational spectroscopies (e.g., near-infrared, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy) are applied to perform a rapid composition analysis, pesticide residue detection, origin discrimination, and flavor/odor prediction using multivariate analysis or machine/deep learning methods.
